The Hana Art Barn had a full schedule of classes for the summer. Students enjoyed "Japanese Paste Paper" with visiting artist Ira Ono, who also conducted a facinating slide presentation of his journey through art. LiAnne Takeuchi-Rose ignited both adults and children alike in her classes, "Modern Dance in the Japanese Butoh Genre" for adults and "Creative Movement for Children". JoAnne Rogers had a large turn out as she guided students through drawing, painting, molding and other artistic techniques with her "Introduction to Fine Art for Youth" and "Open Studio for Children". Bruce Stoner turned up the heat in his "Open Ceramics Studio" as pots, bowls, and plates were created by students including Kyoko Hara, a 14 year old Japanese art student visiting Maui. A handful of young women participated in the "Art of Living Well" class presented by Faith O'Toole. Students experienced various body maintance routines as well as making bath salts and journal writing. Linda Gravatt kept students busy with artistic activities in her "Children's Open Art Studio" on Wednesday mornings and Jozef Smit kept the doors open on Thursday nights with "Open Studio Night." Hana artist Carla Crow also presented a most interesting slide show journey through her three decade career in the arts.
A FALLING MATTER... The Art Barn has survived three hits by falling trees this year. The first was discovered in January as teacher Linda Gravatt prepared for class. The most dramatic incident however was on Wednesday morning July 2 , 1997. Just 2 days into the Summer Art Program, Joanne Rogers and her students in the "Open Studio For Children" class had to duck under tables as a tree came right through the roof! That was number 2. Thanks to Jackie Kahula, class room space was made available immediately which saved the whole summer program that had taken months to plan and coordinate. He had the repairs done within 2 weeks. Thank-you Jackie! After the Art Show and Blessing August 22, a crew was hired by Maui County to clear remaining trees behind the Art Barn, and sometime in that process the Art Barn was hit again, number 3. We plan to include a blessing as a part of our annual August show!
